The distinguished radio icon's career spanned five decades, leading some of the most influential radio programs of his time.

Born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1937, Hayes began his career in newspapers and broadcasting.

In the early 1970s, this legendary broadcaster moved to Britain to continue his radio journey.

Joining Capital Radio in 1973 as a producer, he eventually took to the airwaves.

After leaving LBC in 1990, Hayes joined BBC Radio 2 to host the breakfast show Good Morning UK!

In the 1990s, Hayes hosted Hayes over Britain on BBC Radio 2, winning a Gold Sony Radio Award for Best Phone-In.

He worked with BBC Radio 5 Live until 2006, and contributed to shows on BBC Radio 4, including Not Today, Thank You.

During the 2000s, he graced the airwaves on Friday nights with BBC Radio 5 Live and returned to LBC on Sunday nights.
