King Charles Relinquishes Beloved Hobby After 45 Years

King Charles announced earlier this year that he had to abandon a cherished pastime that has been a cornerstone for the royal household for many years.

Throughout his tumultuous marriage to Princess Diana, the duo frequently indulged in winter getaways on the slopes with Princes William and Harry, a tradition now continued by the siblings' offspring.

Nonetheless, during a formal royal engagement at a Middlesbrough manufacturing site earlier in the year, 77-year-old Charles shared with a group of workers his belief that his "skiing years are now history."

It is thought that his regular ski outings were put on hold in 2023 to minimise injury risks leading up to the coronation set for May of that year.

The subsequent year, the King announced his cancer diagnosis in early February, naturally making it impossible for him to embark on any activity-laden vacations.

When William and Harry were younger, now aged 43 and 41 respectively, their family frequently retreated to Klosters in the Swiss Alps, sometimes accompanied by their cousins Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.

Their March 2005 journey became notably significant due to a press event with Charles, William, and Harry that grabbed headlines because of an unexpected microphone mishap.

Merely days before his impending wedding to Camilla, Charles was overheard commenting on the BBC's then-royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell, remarking, “Those people are awful. I cannot stand that individual. Honestly, he is quite dreadful.”

In another instance in 1998, just a year after losing their mother, William and Harry flew to Whistler in Canada with Charles. Before Diana’s passing, she favoured taking the boys to Lech in Austria.

During one trip, she notably addressed photographers who were sent to cover their stay, asserting, “As a mother, could I request you to honour my children’s privacy?”

Today, the Prince and Princess of Wales delight in taking their three children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, on ski getaways, and royal journalist Richard Palmer remarks, “It’s likely William and Kate are planning another ski vacation with their children, as it’s a shared passion of theirs.

"The Prince and Princess share a strong competitive streak in sports, and George, Charlotte, and Louis are likely to become proficient skiers too, thanks to their frequent vacations.”

In fact, it was initially disclosed that William and Kate were a couple when they were spotted skiing together in Klosters back in 2004.

They were vacationing with a circle of friends. Two years on, they were caught on camera sharing a kiss at the same resort, with the photographs capturing the world's attention and affirming their serious relationship.

Over the years, the couple has revisited Klosters multiple times and has frequently vacationed with the Middleton family. In 2012, William flew Kate to Verbier, also in the Swiss Alps, making up for missing Valentine’s Day after six weeks on duty with the RAF.
