Toto Wolff Dismisses Red Bulls Claim As Nonsense After Helmut Markos Remark

Mercedes' head honcho, Toto Wolff, has criticised Red Bull's Helmut Marko, calling him "mindless" for claiming that Kimi Antonelli deliberately allowed Lando Norris to overtake him during the Qatar Grand Prix.

Antonelli had been defending his position against championship frontrunner Norris as the season’s second-to-last race neared its end on Sunday.

Nevertheless, the Mercedes driver lost his line on turn 10 during the penultimate lap, allowing Norris to sneak past.

Norris went on to finish in fourth place, trailing behind race victor Max Verstappen, his teammate Oscar Piastri, and Williams' Carlos Sainz.

This late move by Antonelli means Norris, despite not clinching the world title in Qatar, enters next weekend's showdown in Abu Dhabi with a 12-point advantage over Verstappen rather than a 10-point lead.

Doubts over Norris' move past Antonelli were voiced by Verstappen’s race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, who radioed to the Dutchman: "I'm unsure of what happened with Antonelli. He seemed to simply step aside and let Norris go by."

Red Bull advisor Marko maintained that Antonelli let Norris through, stating, "He clearly signalled for him to pass".

This assertion was dismissed by Mercedes leader Wolff, who argued that Antonelli merely made an error while criticising Marko's remarks as "mindless".

"Bless his heart," Wolff remarked. "Helmut, this is absolute nonsense. It's staggering to hear such a comment.

"We're competing for second place in the championship, which holds significant value for us. Kimi is battling for a shot at third. How thoughtless can one be to say something like that?

"It frustrates me because I’m already upset with how the race unfolded, annoyed with the mistake at the end, and other blunders, then hearing such absurdities is just exasperating".

Wolff mentioned that he spoke with Lambiase post-race, with the Red Bull engineer offering an apology for his radio comments and admitting he "missed the situation."

"I chatted with GP,' Wolff noted. "I encountered him, and understandably, he was emotional at that point, because they needed a third place, I suppose, to help win the championship; now they need something more.

"I explained to him, '[Kimi] just veered off. He had a slight slip in the prior corner and lacked speed entering the left-hander. It’s possible. With GP, everything is sorted out. We straightened things out. He confessed he didn't notice the situation."

"But why would we engage in this? Why would we consider meddling in a driver’s championship? You need to question whether you’re imagining things".

"I alerted GP that a notable social media stir was brewing. He responded, 'Sorry if I instigated that, I didn’t witness the incident'".

Although Lambiase has apologised for his comments, Marko reiterated his position post-race, claiming 'Antonelli did it twice', referring to Piastri bypassing the Mercedes racer earlier.

Antonelli firmly stated post-race that he had made an 'error', rejecting hints that he let Norris pass.

"Two laps from the end, I entered turn nine with too much speed, lost grip, and veered off the track," Antonelli revealed.

"It was surely a mistake, and I have to move past it now."

Verstappen kept his quest for a fifth consecutive title alive with his seventh victory of the season, benefiting from a McLaren strategy misstep.

The Dutch driver will head to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix trailing Norris by 12 points, with Piastri an additional four points behind.
