Bride Surprised By Unready Bridesmaid Dresses, Wedding Party Goes Shopping

When a bride found herself without dresses for her bridal party, a well-known retailer came through in a crucial moment.

As Kindness Oliver from New Jersey prepared to walk down the aisle, an unexpected challenge arose — the designer she commissioned for her bridesmaids' dresses hadn't completed them in time.

In a widely shared video on Instagram Reels, Oliver, aged 35, captured the unfinished dresses, stating, "The dresses arrived but remain incomplete."

Her bridesmaids quickly got into a car, wearing their silk robes and headed straight to the local Bloomingdale's.

The bridesmaids returned just in the nick of time for the ceremony after selecting coordinating black dresses. Oliver revealed to PEOPLE that the wedding party had mere hours to turn things around.

"I had brought on a designer I've relied on for years and trusted immensely due to his consistent reliability in the past," Oliver tells PEOPLE.

"He crafted my engagement attire, outfits for my mother, my brother's prom attire, and guided designers I have collaborated with. Given our history, I believed he would deliver eight customised designs for my wedding."

She elaborates further, "Despite initiating the process in November and having fittings in January, very little was accomplished.

"On my wedding morning, the bridesmaids’ dresses were still incomplete — mere fabric fragments without closures, seams, straps, or structure.

"My family even fetched the incomplete items from his place, but they returned with bags overflowing with tattered fabric pieces."

"It was devastating and introduced chaos into my wedding morning," Oliver remarks.

She expressed her gratitude towards Bloomingdale's for "rescuing" the wedding.

"My bridesmaids entered in their robes, recounted our dilemma, and the staff immediately took swift action. They offered dresses in black, various sizes, and options — everything.

"Their friendliness and efficiency were commendable, acting as real savers. Thanks to them, my bridesmaids were able to join the ceremony," Oliver tells PEOPLE.

Oliver, who is an event planner and creative director of her own company, Kindness Entertainment Inc., finds it ironic, given her meticulous nature, that this event unfolded as it did.

"I was truly saddened. I wept on several occasions. My bridesmaids were emotional. My closest friend shed tears. As a planner — always prepared with alternatives — this scenario was unfathomable to me.

"Having spent over $25,000 on photography and videography to capture my wedding day, I missed all the 'preparation' moments. No pyjama photos, no morning portraits, not a single one," she reflects on discovering the incomplete attire.

Amidst the frenzy, the bride skipped her cocktail hour, and the photographer couldn't capture pre-ceremony portraits. "I am yet to emotionally recover from that absence," Oliver continues.

Despite the unfortunate events, Oliver still cherished moments of happiness on her wedding day.

"Upon finally reaching the aisle and seeing my spouse, the ceremony marked the first tranquil point in my hectic day," Oliver describes.

"Until that moment, everything felt burdened and restless — but as soon as our eyes met, I regained a sense of calm. It reminded me why I was there, momentarily easing my emotional distress before the rest of the day unfolded."

"What saddens me the most is even though my wedding visually embodied my dreams — with its elaborate production, custom décor, structures within the venue, personalised elements, and luxurious details — I didn't fully experience it as planned," Oliver expresses.

"The joy of the morning was absent. I missed the photographs. I wasn't able to enjoy the tranquillity before the festivities.

"I didn't get to experience my thoughtfully curated cocktail hour. I financed an event that became a spectator experience for me rather than one I could partake in."

Oliver remarks that she "felt like I was navigating my own wedding while overwhelmed by everything that went wrong."

"Even as the event progressed, and despite smiling and being present, the emotional impact of the morning lingered.

"It's a feeling I still carry today — not because the wedding wasn't beautiful, but because significant moments I cherished were lost," Oliver confides to PEOPLE.
