Teen Aspiring Lion Tamer Tragically Mauled In Zoo Enclosure

A 19-year-old youth was fatally attacked after entering a lion's habitat early on Sunday in Brazil.

A viral video documented the event, showing the individual climbing a nearly 26-foot-high barrier to access the lioness’s area at Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park, referred to locally as Bica, located in João Pessoa, Paraíba.

Local media Correio Braziliense identified him as Gerson de Melo Machado, who had long aspired to become a lion tamer.

Reports indicate Machado had experienced mental health challenges and had a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

The zoo released a statement confirming the man's intentional entry into the lion’s space, resulting in an attack from the animal, leading to fatal injuries.

"The Arruda Câmara Zoobotanical Park (Bica) expresses deep regret over the unfortunate event that occurred this Sunday morning when an individual voluntarily entered the lioness's area, leading to their demise," the zoo shared through social media on Sunday.

"This is a profoundly sorrowful moment for everyone, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the bereaved family and friends."

In the video, onlookers were horrified as the young man ascended the towering fence and descended a nearby tree.

A lion spotted him, approached the tree base, and waited as he made his way down.

As he neared the ground, the lion pounced on him. He attempted to escape, vanishing into the foliage and briefly resurfacing during his flight, only to be attacked once more by the lioness. The assault continued out of view behind a wall.

After the incident, the park was shut down to implement safety measures and facilitate the removal of the body.

The zoo announced that Bica will remain closed to the public until investigations and all formal procedures are finalised.

Throughout his life, Machado grappled with mental health challenges, with reports citing that his mother also had schizophrenia, according to Correio, referencing child welfare advocate Verônica Oliveira, who had observed him since he was young.

Oliveira expressed that Machado had always dreamed of travelling to Africa to become a lion tamer and was once found hiding in an aeroplane's landing gear, believing it would take him there.

The zoo clarified that there are no intentions to put the lion down, underscoring that the tragic event resulted from a willful intrusion, an occurrence that was "entirely unforeseeable" and "unrelated to any standard protocol at the park."

The lion is reportedly under stress but does not display any behaviour that necessitates euthanasia.

"It's crucial to note that euthanasia was never on the table," stated the zoo. "Leona is healthy, showing no aggressive tendencies outside the specific incident’s context, and she will not be euthanised."
