Popes Scooter Tip To England: Simply Wear A Helmet

As the England squad gears up for the second Ashes Test against Australia, the local press captured images of captain Ben Stokes, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, and fast bowler Mark Wood using public e-scooters without helmets.

The regulations in Queensland require that when operating a personal mobility device, an approved helmet must be worn. Not adhering to this can result in a fine of A$166 (£82).

"Just make sure to wear a helmet next time. Rules are there for a reason. I have nothing further to add," commented batter Pope.

The second Test at the Gabba, a day-night match under the lights, is set to begin at 04:00 GMT on Thursday.

The team's activities have recently been a focal point in local media during their Australian tour.

Upon their arrival at Perth airport, players were recorded with particular focus on Stokes and batter Joe Root.

The team has been followed by drones while playing golf, and some members were photographed visiting a Perth aquarium.

Following a significant loss in the first Test, their performance and attitude were subjected to intense scrutiny.

Former Australian bowler Mitchell Johnson even called the team "arrogant."

Currently trailing 1-0 in the series, the team plans a retreat to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane, after the second Test, regardless of the outcome.

Pope expressed that the England squad is "quite aware" of the media glare but emphasised the importance of having personal time away from cricket.

"As cricketers and individuals, it's crucial to unwind and be ourselves," explained the Surrey player.

At 27, Pope is experiencing his second Ashes tour and noted the contrast from his previous visit four years ago, marked by strict COVID-19 protocols.

"Staying locked up in your room is unhealthy, as we learned during COVID," said Pope.

"Taking breaks from cricket, whether for a day or two, is essential.

"If they decide to capture us during those moments, so be it. Maintaining equilibrium during an extended tour is vital."

England has announced their lineup for the second Test, with all-rounder Will Jacks stepping in for the injured Wood.
