A breathtaking remote island is searching for two adventurous individuals to manage a café during spring and summer, but there's a significant challenge involved.
The scenic Great Blasket Island, situated off the coast of Dunquin, near Dingle in the Republic of Ireland, is seeking a pair to oversee the café and the island's overnight accommodations.
The responsibilities of the caretakers include supervising three holiday cottages, handling tasks like "cleaning and painting," caring for overnight guests, and, naturally, serving tea and coffee while managing the "day-to-day operations."
In a unique appeal to those yearning for off-grid life, the wildlife-rich Great Blasket Island lacks permanent inhabitants, yet caretakers will find themselves quite occupied.
On the job application page, it states: "The caretakers' role is to manage the coffee shop and three holiday cottages on Great Blasket Island."
Further details outline: "This involves welcoming and hosting overnight guests, cleaning and painting three holiday cottages, serving tea, coffee, and snacks to daytime visitors at the coffee shop, and ensuring the daily operations are maintained.
"We are seeking a diligent, responsible, and reliable team with excellent interpersonal skills and initiative. This is not a holiday job. The season can become VERY busy, requiring long hours on your feet each day."
It emphasises the demanding nature of the role further on the page, mentioning that the island can become "VERY busy," describing it as "intense," with caretakers expected to be aware that the location is "quite limited" in terms of amenities.
Chosen candidates are expected to arrive on the island by the final week of March, as the season stretches from April 1 to mid-October, depending on the weather.
Regarding weather conditions, the listing clarifies that days off are "determined" by the weather. For instance, prolonged bad weather could prevent sailings, whereas a month of sunshine could again make for a rigorous period for the caretakers.
However, the position comes with benefits, offering caretakers both wages and room and board, although it notes that alcohol and toiletries are not included in daily provisions.
Similar to last year, the fortunate candidates will reside in a bedroom above the café, utilising the site's kitchen.
The application mentions that "general DIY or maintenance" is encouraged during extended breaks from work due to bad weather or days off.
Designated as a "Special Area of Conservation," the island spans four miles and covers over 1,100 acres.
Uninhabited since 1953, Great Blasket Island is reportedly one of the most isolated Irish-speaking regions of Corca Dhuibhne.
A major appeal of the island is its natural beauty; visitors can expect to potentially spot species like Risso's, common and bottlenose dolphins, basking sharks, grey seals, and whales.
The island also hosts a variety of birdlife, including gannets, puffins, Arctic terns, guillemots, and cormorants.
