Discover Reading Slump Reasons And 5 Tips To Reignite Passion

Books provide a unique delight to readers, but it can be disheartening when this joy becomes overwhelming.

Motivation can drop dramatically, transforming the simple act of starting a new chapter into a daunting task, often leaving the book unfinished.

The decline in eagerness can be worrisome, as some days, even holding a book feels emotionally exhausting.

Is this scenario familiar? Wanting to engage with a book but finding it difficult to initiate? If reading feels taxing, exploring the psychological factors behind this, along with effective strategies to revive your love for reading, could guide you back gently.

Reading serves as a pastime for some and a vital ability for others, but no matter the kind of reader you are, at its foundation, reading is a habit, and like any other habit, it can be nurtured and reinforced with diligence and commitment.

HT Lifestyle reached out to specialists for insights into the psychology of reading slumps, along with simple strategies to resume reading, without feeling overwhelmed.

What triggers a reading slump?

The switch from being an enthusiastic reader, eager to explore narratives and delve into books, to having no interest at all can be startling.

However, there’s a true psychological explanation for this, and once identified, breaking free from this cycle becomes easier.

Dr Kedar Tilwe, consultant psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital Mulund & Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, explained that reading slumps occur due to multiple reasons.

It doesn't imply a lack of motivation, so no need to criticise yourself for leaving books half-read.

“Everyday stresses, being consumed by responsibilities, disrupted daily schedules, and the presence can hinder reading and result in waning interest,” the psychiatrist outlined the potential causes.

In our digitally saturated environment, where most content appears in brief, bite-sized formats that barely test our attention spans, picking up a book can seem formidable after scrolling through endless 30-second videos.

Dr Tilwe also agreed that frequent use of digital media shortens attention spans and reduces patience.

Much of the content is quick and consumable, as the psychiatrist aptly put it, "bullet-pointed." A healthy way to refine your focus, according to Dr Tilwe, involves dedicating a few moments daily to reading something you enjoy.

5 ways to rediscover the joy of reading

Moreover, for practical strategies to rekindle your reading habit, Meera Raman, co-founder and CEO of BoiPoka, provided some genre recommendations and reading tactics for easier engagement.

She remarked, "Even the most avid reader can fall into a reading slump, similar to writer's block. Busy life takes over, seemingly more pressing issues become the focus, and reading steadily fades from routine. ”

No cause for concern, as reading slumps are a normal part of life and can touch even the most dedicated readers.

Here are some of her practical tips to re-engage with reading:

1. Dive into a crime or mystery novel

  • These genres frequently lead recommendation lists because their suspense captivates readers. When concentration wanes, the allure of intrigue performs most of the work.
  • This genre doesn’t demand intense emotional investment right away. It presents questions and promises answers.

2. Begin a book series

  • Try a book series. Once characters and settings become familiar, the storyline entices you.
  • Continuing with a series feels more like revisiting something ongoing rather than starting afresh.
  • This approach helps reading to feel more natural.

3. Opt for shorter books

  • Completing a book swiftly can boost confidence, and realising closure is more significant than anticipated.
  • One finished book often motivates starting another.

4. Revisit old favourites

  • Choosing a familiar story is reassuring, as there is comfort in knowing the plot, which can calm an anxious mind.

5. Explore different formats

  • Change the format. Audiobooks have emerged as a great initial step for many.
  • Listening during commutes or household tasks keeps stories vibrant without additional time requirements.
  • Once engrossed in the plot, switching to physical or e-books becomes easier.
